• Medium mounting height: usually sensible for classic hunting scopes with 50–56 mm objectives.
• High mounting height: sensible for large objectives, thick barrels, or when additional front attachments/accessories require clearance.

As a rule of thumb: as low as possible, as high as necessary. The decisive factor is always the real outer diameter of the objective, not just the nominal specification.
