Gränsfors Drawknife – Swedish drawknife for debarking, shaping and carving green wood
If you want to remove wood surfaces in a controlled manner, an axe is often too rough and a knife too slow.
The Gränsfors Drawknife is a classic drawknife for woodworking by pulling: debarking, carving green wood, smoothing round wood, shaping handles, breaking edges and cleanly preparing larger surfaces.
The long blade allows for consistent strokes over larger workpieces. This is precisely what makes the tool so powerful when wood is not just to be cut but also shaped.
Why this drawknife?
✔ Ideal for debarking, carving green wood and shaping round wood
✔ Long blade for even material removal
✔ Working by pulling for high control
✔ Hand-forged tool from Sweden
✔ Handles for powerful and precise guidance
✔ Supplied with leather sheath depending on the version
Why a drawknife?
A drawknife works differently than an axe or carving knife. You pull the blade towards you in a controlled manner and control the removal of material via angle, pressure and body movement.
- You can remove bark quickly and cleanly
- You smooth round wood more efficiently than with a short knife
- You shape handles, posts and workpieces in a controlled manner
- You work more evenly over longer surfaces
- You get more surface control than with an axe
Drawknife vs. Carving Axe:
❌ Carving axe: fast, rough removal, but striking and more localized
✔ Drawknife: pulling, more controlled and ideal for longer surfaces
Many wood projects benefit from both tools: axe for rough shaping, drawknife for clean surfaces.
Practical added value:
The drawknife only becomes truly powerful when the workpiece is securely fixed. You work much more controlled and safely on a carving horse or a stable workbench.
Without fixation, you lose power, precision and safety.

Our assessment
The Gränsfors drawknife is one of those tools whose usefulness you immediately understand as soon as you work with it on fixed wood. It is not as rough as an axe and not as slow as a small knife.
It is particularly strong on round wood, handles, posts, beams and workpieces where even surfaces are to be created. You can remove material quickly, but remain very controlled via the blade angle.
For fine details, you will also need knives, chisels or carving tools. For the transition from raw wood to a clean basic shape, however, the drawknife is extremely efficient.
Suitable for
-
Green-Woodworkers: for fresh wood, blanks, handles and workpieces
-
Bushcrafters: for functional woodworking in camp
-
Woodworkers: for debarking, smoothing and shaping
-
Hunting ground and cabin construction: when round wood needs to be processed
-
Traditional woodworking: for carving horses, workbenches and log building work
Why exactly for you?
If you want to remove, smooth or shape wood in a controlled manner, the drawknife is significantly more efficient than improvised work with an axe or knife.
Important note:
The drawknife is pulled towards the body. Secure workpiece fixation, a stable stance and controlled movements are absolutely essential.
Never work with a loose workpiece on your lap or in a position where slipping could lead to injury to your legs or hands.
Application scenarios
-
Debarking: Quickly and evenly remove bark from trunks or branches.
-
Shaping handles: Bring axe, hammer or tool handles into basic shape.
-
Smoothing round wood: Prepare posts, timber or construction timber.
-
Bushcraft projects: Cleanly process seating wood, frames or simple constructions.
Practical tip: Keep the angle shallow
For smooth removal, guide the drawknife flatter. For stronger removal, set it steeper.
Don't just work from your arms – use body movement and pull evenly. This will make the surface smoother.

FAQ
What do I use a drawknife for?
For debarking, smoothing and shaping wood – especially for round wood, handles, posts and larger workpieces.
Do I need a carving horse?
A carving horse is highly recommended. The better the workpiece is fixed, the safer and more precisely you work.
Is the drawknife suitable for fine details?
Only conditionally for details. It is strong for controlled material removal over longer surfaces. For fine work, you need additional carving tools.
How does it differ from an axe?
An axe works by striking, a drawknife by pulling. This makes the drawknife more controlled when smoothing and shaping longer surfaces.
Especially in the field of drawknives, green wood carving and traditional woodworking, secure workpiece fixation and the correct cutting angle determine quality and control.
